a world of friends is a world of peace
PROMOTING GLOBAL UNDERSTANDING ACROSS THE BARRIERS THAT SEPARATE PEOPLE THROUGH FRIENDSHIP FORCE INTERNATIONAL. |
|
Friendship Force is an cultural exchange and home hospitality program to promote international understanding, friendship and world peace. Welcome to our way of seeing the world! Friendship Force is about traveling in a way where we can get to the heart of the people... it is about faces, not places. We have found from experience that the best guides to the understanding of another culture are the people who live it, and who are prepared to invite others to live it with them for a while, sharing insights, experiences, fun, and friendships. It is travel with a mission to promote understanding across the barriers that separate people.

FFWM
Friendship Force of Western Michigan (FFWM) began in 1990 and members have traveled to 6 continents in the past 30+ years. Our members are from Holland, Grand Rapids, and Kalamazoo. We have many activities and get-togethers during the year.
Friendship Force International
Friendship Force International is our parent organization. It was founded by Wayne Smith and introduced on March 1, 1977 by U.S. President Jimmy Carter. Friendship Force was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize in 1992 for its initiatives between the United States and the Soviet Union. For information on the international organization, visit the website at http://thefriendshipforce.org.
How It Works
At the core of our organization is the “journey” and the “home-stay”. Those members who leave their community are called “ambassadors” and those with whom they stay are called “hosts”. During a journey the host club will provide a program of activities which includes home hospitality for a period of 3-7 days.
Here in West Michigan we host between 10 and 15 ambassadors on any one journey, usually twice a year. These hosting events require a commitment from members to open their doors and free their time to accommodate our guests. Our club also has one or two outbound journeys every year where our members travel together to visit another club. Opportunities can also be had by joining other clubs’ journeys. Check out the catalog of current journeys at http://www.thefriendshipforce.org/journeys/
More information on how the club functions can be found in the New Member Orientation Manual.

“Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn’t do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines, sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.”
